The article describes what we encounter when becoming stressed, and how to move on from there. It's high time we started doing something about stress, which is incapacitating such a large portion of the people of the world.

You know what? Stress management doesn’t work!

I can just hear you say “What are you talking about?” “Are you crazy?”

Well – the simple fact is that stress is NOT something you can manage. There is a lot of hype about stress being manageable, and it IS possible to be more efficient, and eliminate some of the time consuming tasks you face everyday. But eventually you WILL have to make a decision to STOP accepting more stress altogether.

Stress builds on you if you forget to wind down, so you have to decide to release your stress on a daily basis. And, by the way – watching TV does NOT release stress. When you watch the news or a movie – whether it is action, drama or thriller, you ADD to the stress you have already built up during your day.

We all have 24 hours to spend everyday. That’s it. No more – no less. We talk about “saving time” – well what is that about? It’s completely impossible to save time. The only thing you may do, is work harder, so that you feel stressed sooner. If you don’t take time off regularly to REGAIN your strength – mentally as well as physically – you will end up being stressed – management or not.

So how to fight the stress? First of all, stress should not be fought. Stress is a reminder from your body that you have gone too far. It’s like when you feel pain in your knees after having run too much – you stop. Stress is pain in you psyche, and it can look like fattigue, depression, lack of sexual desire, tiredness, and eventually even as physical pains. Don’t fight stress – accept it, and choose differently. Because YOU have chosen your own stress!

That’s right. You did it. If you don’t respect your limits – not saying no, or accepting to do too much. Why do you choose stress, when you know how dangerous it is? There are many reasons, but most have to do with the way you were brought up. You have been conditioned by your parents, teachers, friends and yourself to live your life the way you do.

You have accepted incredible amounts of information as “facts” daily since you were a child, simply because they are being conveyed by authorities in you life. When mom or dad tells you that “working hard is necessary to live in a harsh world” you may just accept it, and for the rest of your life you could believe that to be a fact. You will be affected, and your decisions about work and money will also be affected.

Look around you. The facts you find are true to you, may not be so to others. In fact most of what we hold true, is only true to us, and nobody else. The experts tell us what we have to do, in order to get what we want, and the next day another expert will tell you exactly the opposite. We are in conflict with ourselves, and that is creating big amounts of stress in us.

How can you escape this vicious circle?

1. First of all, you have to accept the fact you are caught, and want to get out.

2. Next, you must start doing something else.. If you keep doing what you have always done, you will get the results you have always gotten. Trying to get a different result by doing what you used to do, is illogical, and frankly na?.

3. Thirdly you should make your desire to change visible. Take a piece of paper and write what you want. Don’t write what you don’t want! And make sure that what you write is positive and in the present tense. For instance: Don’t write “I don’t want to be stressed anymore” Instead write: “I am so happy that I am living the life I want with loving people around me.” Place that piece of paper on your bedroom mirror, or somewhere else you will see it often. Better yet. Make several, and spread them across your walls and doors.

4. Take action. After having started the process, you will need discipline to make the change permanent. Be sure to congratulate yourself every 2-3 days with being firm, and keeping a promise to yourself. Go to a cafe, or invite yourself to a dinner at a restaurant. Visit some friends or do something else that characterizes as a pad on your shoulder.

5. Finally, when you have been going for a while, you will have made a permanent change. Usually this takes somewhere between 21 days and a month. Celebrate! when you have reached your goal – give yourself what you desire. This action will enhance your feeling of success, and motivate you whenever you want to make another change in your life.

Stress is destroying you, and cannot be managed – start changing the circle TODAY.

Not a subject to be taken lightly and one where expert medical advice is strongly recommended if you are not well. In today’s modern world it is a growing malaise, but what can we do to help ourselves?

A good diet, exercise and making time for relaxation are all important. That’s all very well I hear you say, but where do we get the time to make sure we do that? Not easy I know, especially if you have work plus kids to contend with. Most working people have probably had time management presentations at work and feel their employer lives on another planet and Timex in an ad campaign confirmed that there are only 24 hours in a day. However, these three things are prerequisites for a healthy life and your agenda needs to include them.

A good diet consists of a moderate intake of complex carbohydrates, fat and protein, plus large helpings of fresh fruit and veg. Fast food need not be unhealthy. Salads take little time to prepare and added to a protein and carbohydrate source provide a nutritious main meal.

Exercise should ideally consist of 20 minutes aerobic activity and 40 minutes of weight training at least 3 times a week. However, being a realist I know this will not be possible for some, but do try to do something. Try walking or cycling to work. A walk surrounded by greenery is very therapeutic but the pace should not be too leisurely. If you do make time for your favourite soap, perhaps try exercising while watching. A few bicep curls and squats should not be too hard to fit in and will not disturb your viewing too much.

Relaxation can be achieved through a whole range of activities. I mentioned walking and exercise above. To that add reading, listening to music and meditation (especially if you find it hard to mentally switch off). I’m sure you can think of other ways too

If there are particular things going on in your life causing you stress then you need to talk to someone, preferably qualified if it is a serious problem. If the problem is your employment, then it could be ultimately the most sensible thing to do is work elsewhere.

There is evidence that a deficiency of magnesium and of vitamin B6 can lead to anxiety. Also, when under stress the body uses more vitamin C, so supplementing your diet with these could be beneficial. Excessive alcohol and caffeine is not recommended!

Gamma aminobutyric acid – is a neurotransmitter, which inhibits anxiety. Whether taking supplements is useful is something only your feedback can provide. Herbs like valerian are thought to naturally effect GABA levels. I find that valerian does not relax me and has the opposite effect, which is one of its contraindications, but many people find it very effective in helping with insomnia and stress. There are numerous other herbs such as hops, black cohosh, blue vervain, chamomile, damiana, evening primrose oil, Korean ginseng, lobelia, oatstraw, passionflower, St. John’s Wort and Scullcap that aid relaxation.

If you are taking medication then ask your doctor about the risks in using any of these herbs. I know when using St John’s Wort you should be very careful of over exposure to the sun, so it may be wise to not use it in the summer.

As always I am always interested in people’s own experiences of dealing with illness so, please feel free to join my forum.

I have a keen interest in using natural remedies and have had years of experience in using herbs and homeopathy.

My site The Apothecary was set up to discuss natural remedies and related subjects.

Philip is interested in and has gained a great deal of information and years of experience in dealing with health and fitness topics, and has created his own site The Apothecary to discuss natural remedies and related subjects.

Aromatherapy as we know it today was accidentally discovered in 1910 by a French chemist named Rene-Maurice Gattefosse. After burning his hand during an experiment in a perfume factory, he plunged it into a vat of Lavender essential oil, and was amazed at how quickly and well his hand later healed. Thus modern aromatherapy was born. The use of aromatic plants in healing and medicine can be traced back to thousands of years BC however, and evidence of the use of essential oils has even been found in Egyptian tombs and hieroglyphics.

The practice of aromatherapy harnesses the healing properties of aromatic plants and trees in the form of essential oils which are extracted from the leaves, flowers, stems, bark and roots. The extracted oils are highly concentrated, but when diluted they are suitable for use in baths, oil burners, massage oils, creams, lotions and sprays.

Aromatherapy is an extremely effective treatment for stress, as there are a number of oils which have sedating, relaxing and uplifting properties. The connection between smell and emotion is very strong, and breathing in pleasant smells triggers positive reactions in the brain which creates a sense of well being. This therapeutic effect works in addition to the healing properties of the oils.

Essential oils should not be taken internally but should be absorbed into the body either through inhalation or through the skin. There are a number of oils available which are used to treat stress and its symptoms, and there is a wide variety of ways in which oils can be used.

Probably the most relaxing way to enjoy aromatherapy is in the form of a massage by a qualified aromatherapist, however there are still plenty of benefits to be had by practicing aromatherapy at home. Good quality essential oils can be purchased from reputable suppliers such as drugstores, natural health stores and specialist web sites. Do not buy cheap low quality oils as these are usually synthetically produced, and whilst they may smell the same, they contain none of the therapeutic benefits of the plant.

Oils such as Bergamot, Neroli, Frankincense, Geranium, Ylang-Ylang and Sandalwood are very safe, and will induce relaxation and lift your mood. Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Rose, Jasmine, Marjoram and Clary Sage have the same effect, but these oils should not be used if you are pregnant. You should avoid using any essential oils in the first trimester of pregnancy without taking advice from a doctor or a qualified aromatherapist.

You can use essential oils on their own or blended with one or two other oils for maximum effect. If you are using them on the skin they should always be diluted in a carrier oil such as Sunflower or Sweet Almond. Ways that you can use essential oils at home include:

Baths. Fill the bathtub with warm (not hot) water, then dilute 4 – 6 drops of essential oil in a few tablespoons of vegetable oil or milk, and add to the water. Close the door so that the vapours don’t escape, and soak for at least ten minutes.

Oil Burner. Add 2tbsp warm water to the oil burner bowl and then add 3 – 6 drops of essential oil. Light the candle underneath, and the heat will disperse the oils into the air.

Lamp Ring. Place two or three drops of essential oil onto a lamp ring, and place the ring on a light bulb. The heat from the light bulb will cause the oils to disperse into the air.

Room Sprays. Use a new plant sprayer, and add warm but not boiling water. Add the essential oil (4 drops per ½ pint water) and shake before use. Spray into the air, but avoid spraying onto surfaces and fabric which are likely to stain.

Massage. For massage, the essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil such as Sunflower, Sweet Almond or Grapeseed. You will probably need around 7-10 teaspoons of carrier oil for a full body massage, so add 1 drop of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil. Mix well and apply to the skin with long sweeping strokes, always massaging towards the heart.

Using aromatherapy oils at home should be done with care. The essential oils mentioned here are very safe, but some oils can present hazards if not properly used. If you are in any doubt, always consult a qualified aromatherapist.

You should bear in mind the following guidelines before using essential oils:

1) Never use undiluted oils directly on the skin

2) Always seek professional advice from a medical practitioner or qualified aromatherapist if you have sensitive skin, are prone to allergic reactions, are pregnant or breast feeding, have a medical condition or are taking anticoagulant drugs.

3) Seek advice from a qualified aromatherapist before using oils on children.

4) Avoid alcohol when using essential oils.

5) Avoid exposure to the sun if you have used essential oils on the skin.

6) Always keep essential oils out of the reach of children.

Since Yoga is considered a science that helps in the all-round development of a human, it can be effectively used for the betterment of diabetes patients. It is an extensive exercise that involves busting of stress and providing peace of mind.

One of the contributing factors of Diabetes is stress. Given the modern lifestyles, most people find themselves amid a sea of tension and stress. It is difficult for them to avoid stress altogether.

However, if the treatment of Diabetes and stress busting go hand in hand, the patient can still lead a fairly normal life. This requires major modifications in his lifestyles. This is exactly where Yoga can become an effective tool.

One of the major focuses of Yoga is to bring about the ideal features of a healthy body. It means a proportionate body, which is strong enough and can fight with ailments. Various Yogasanas help attain this position in a very systematic manner.

Similarly, the mental, intellectual and emotional conflicts are also taken care of with the help of Yoga. While studies have shown that intellectual and emotional states of mind have a bearing on the progression of this disease, they have also emphasized that stress reduction can help in the better management of glycemic control. If this target is achieved, diabetes can be controlled effectively.

While a lot is talked about yoga, yoga is not just theory. It needs to be practiced. To make its practice easy and correct, diabeteshormone.com has used movies and slide shows to provide information.

Some very useful and credible information about the role of Yoga in treatment of Diabetes is effectively showcased on diabeteshormone.com. There is a full movie section on Yoga apart from a slide show at the Online Class section. All these are divided into two major areas- for beginners and for people who are already doing basic level Yoga.

The section gives not only theory but also practical implementation of Yogasanas through visual aids. The experts featuring on the show have presented clear and detailed demonstration of Yogasanas, making them easier to practice. In addition, the section also has an exclusive visual presentation on Pranayam that features the various advantages and practical implementation of this Yogasana. Another very useful section involves the Padmasana and Tadasana-two very effective Yoga exercises.

As per Dr Sunil M Jain, there is another side also which must be remembered. Any activity involving holding of breath may increase pressure in eye ball. Thus patients who have damage to retina [Diabetic retinopathy] should avoid any Yoga exercises like Pranayam etc that involve holding of breath.

Thus, stress management with the help of Yoga may be useful in getting better control over Diabetes.

With the constant evolution of our society, we are under more and more pressure to do more in less time with less resources. More and more people are feeling a loss of control over their lives and are becoming more and more stressed by this.

Stress has become something that too many people have become accustomed to living with every day. Once stress was a rare occurrence, but with modern pressures, it is increasingly becoming a daily concern.

As stress is often caused by the environment around you, there are things you can do to reduce you stress levels. You may not be able to control your external environment, but you can certainly control your reaction to it. This will allow you to control the degree to which stress affects you.

I’d like to give you 5 simple, but practical tips to help you reduce your stress today.

Tip 1 – Exercise Every Day

When you get stressed it releases Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone (ACTH) into your bloodstream to give you a boost to engage the fight or flight reaction. As many of us live a sedentary lifestyle these days, the ACTH is never worked out of your system and remains there. This will cause physical problems with long term exposure. Exercise will help you to work the ACTH out of your system and avoid the long term effects of it remaining in your system.

Tip 2 – Drink Water

Your body is 80-90% water, and drinking lots of water will help keep you in good health. It will help to keep your immune system healthy and to reduce your stress. Avoid coffee and alcohol during the day as these will actually increase your stress levels by activating the fight or flight mechanism and releasing ACTH into your system.

Tip 3 – Listen To Music

Music has a very relaxing effect on your body. If you listen to music you consider relaxing it will help to reduce your stress. New age, classical, and nature sounds are common types of music used for relaxation. Some people even prefer louder and more active music to relax to. It’s whatever works for you. If it is possible, listen to music whilst you work or go about your day as that will help you relax more too.

Tip 4 – Take Naps

Taking some regular naps can really help you feel better and reduce your stress. Often when you are stressed you get tired in the afternoon and do not sleep well at night. People such as Leonardo Da Vinci used to take regular 20 minute naps to recharge themselves. If you are unable to take a nap due to work, then a brisk walk at lunch will help to reduce your stress.

Tip 5 – How Urgent Is It Really?

Everything may feel urgent, or everything may be presented to you as urgent, but how much of it is really urgent? Make sure you prioritize your actions and focus on what you are doing. Don’t allow yourself to be continually distracted from what you are working on by the phone or emails or so on. Generally people will be understanding when you prioritize your life and will respect you more for it.

These are five very simple tips you can use on a daily basis to reduce your stress. Start using these now and notice how much more relaxed you are.
