By: Lester Sim
The workplace is where stress management is most important. Stress happens most to people during work. There are people of different characters and personalities, simultaneous demands, chains of command, expectations, procedures, due dates, rules and work ethics, to name a few. Stress in the workplace, without proper stress management, will affect job performance and reduce job quality.

Hence, here are some useful tips on how to handle and manage stress in the workplace:

1. Separate Business from Pleasure

If you happen to have a personal disagreement with your spouse or with friends, leave those emotions at home. Remember that at work, you are a professional and that you have to maintain good ties with your colleagues for as long as you work under the same roof.

2. Get a Management Diary

Bad time management is also one of the biggest stress factors. A management diary helps to plan and organize tasks accordingly. It acts as a reminder, contact organizer, calendar, and some even come with world maps and provide world time zones. A management diary is a useful tool to begin with personal stress management.

3. Exercise!

If you’re not doing it yet, do it now. Just don’t overdo it because you’ll be too tired and it will stress you some more. Get out of your office for some walk around the block if you’re tensed. Put on your sneakers and go to a park after work. Do some yoga. Bring the kids to the swimming pool. Remember: it doesn’t have to make you sweat.

4. Enjoy What You Do

How much do you love your job? Do you feel that this is the job you wanted, or is this someplace to work temporarily before proceeding for other endeavors? If you answer ‘Yes’ to the latter, chances are you feel stressed all the time at work. It would be helpful to consider other options that could suit you.

5. If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them

Isolating yourself from your colleagues is not a good idea. Have lunch with your colleagues. Join them for tea. Share some juicy gossip (be careful of this, though). Participate in company/department functions. No man’s an island. Sometimes it’s the friendships that makes work beautiful.

To relieve your stress quickly & naturally, you can check out G. Gaynor McTigue’s 400 Stress-Relief techniques. Strategies he shares really work for me at least. G. Gaynor McTigue is an author of bestselling “Life’s Little Frustration” book just in case you don’t know him.
he right time management exercises for you and your needs can be rather difficult. Many people do not know how to manage their time effectively.

They spend hours upon hours each month spending time ineffectively and becoming agitated.

However, they do not have to waste this time. Instead, they can use simple time management tools that even children can understand.

Like any other life skill, it is something to be learned and practiced until you master the timemanagement techniques that work best for your life and lifestyle. However, if right now you have poor time management in the workplace you risk your very job, and definitely your future career development, and you definitely risk making your job much more stressful than it should ever need to be.

So, let us start at the beginning, with two basic steps to master in learning time management skills.

The most important time management skill that you can use is keeping track of your time. Many people spend their days just doing whatever they want, then wonder why they get none of the importing things on their TO DO list done by the end of the day.

However, if you keep track of your time while you are on a task, you will be more motivated to complete it. Otherwise, you will not really care when you finish the task.

Another great idea that you can use when you are trying to manage your time is using a chart. A chart can give you the information about what you do everyday.

Simply write everything that you do down on the chart for seven days, and see where you can improve. For example, make only one trip to the store per week, instead of two or three.

This way, you can save gas, driving time, and energy to put towards more important tasks.

Finding the right time management exercises for your needs can be difficult. However, it does not have to be.

Instead, you can spend your time enjoying your free time and finishing your tasks early. Even just starting by getting more organized, to at least write down what you would like to get done everyday into a TO DO list, and calculating roughly how much time each task will take to do is a step in the right direction. This was you can at least see if you are dramatically overloading yourself, by not being realistic about how long it will take to complete all those tasks.

Do not waste any more of your time, instead spend your time learning good time management tips so that you will soon be doing what you enjoy, thanks to these techniques!

Warning: You can waste all your precious time running in circles, becoming dangerously stressed and even risking your job, if you don’t master the essential skill of time management.

Get the best timemanagement tools and improve your life efficiency. Only then can you really appreciate the pleasures of life and be relaxed enough to improve your life even more for yourself and your loved ones.

As Helene Malmsio from Time Management in the Workplace website says “Ensure that you have a clear idea of what you need to accomplish in your working day and be realistic! You will do yourself no favours by trying to complete a week’s worth of work in one day. All you will accomplish if you try this technique is a big ball of stress in your stomach and a head ache to go with it.”

Learning time management in the workplace and finding the right time management exercises for you is actually not difficult. It may take time at first, but once you’ve mastered the necessary skills, you will feel less pressured and be able to work better.

Being efficient with time management in the workplace is essential to your success. Learning what the right time management exercises are for your needs is a great way to start learning time management.

In Chinese, the word for crisis has two characters. One character is for “problem,” the other for “opportunity.” As absenteeism, disability claims and employee turnover increase, we find ourselves in a workplace healthcare crisis. In a 2001 study entitled, Increasing Participation in Corporate Wellness Programs: A Segmentation Study of Employee Differences, Paula Haynes of the University of Tennessee underlines how important it is to provide a wide variety of services in corporate health and wellness programs to address our healthy workplace crisis.

Although some people still do not buy into alternative or “ethnic” medicine and therapies, many people do, and it’s not just individuals. The Government of Canada and major businesses like the Royal Bank of Canada are acknowledging the effectiveness of various massage therapies, acupuncture and acupressure, among others. Empirical testing has proven many of these therapies work, so government, business and employee assistance programs are incorporating them into their approved service listings.

These alternative therapies often focus on health prevention, promotion and maintenance, unlike traditional western medicine where we only treat patients who are already sick. This is good news for corporations who have to foot the bill for workplace injuries, decreased productivity, higher insurance costs, etc.

Several of these alternative therapies target muscles and joints where problems can occur, for example, stiffness from sitting still and pain due to repetitive activity. If you’re sitting at your desk, slouching at the end of a tiring day, stressed about deadlines and staring at a computer screen, but focusing instead on your headache, stiff neck, sore hands, or aching back, you are not alone.

This situation is a common one for many. In fact, according to a 2000 Integra Survey–a random telephone survey of 1,305 working adults in the United States–62 percent of respondents routinely ended their day with work-related neck pain, 44 percent reported sore eyes, 38 percent complained of aching hands, and 34 percent reported difficulty in sleeping because they felt too stressed.

You could suffer until your next holiday or you could quit your job, but neither of these options is likely suitable. Happily, wellness practices, such as those employed in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can be instrumental in helping to cope with the stresses at work.

Decompress the Stress

TCM identifies seven emotions as injurious to our health: extreme anger, joy, worry, pensiveness, sadness, fear, and shock. While it is important to feel each of these emotions at appropriate times, when the emotion is especially intense or is felt over a prolonged period of time–particularly if it is not expressed–it can cause illness.

Be aware of your stress level when you eat. When the body is under stress, it tends to act like an overheated engine, so it is best to avoid spicy, hot foods. Stay away from greasy, heavy, fatty, and sugary foods, which are also difficult to digest. Eat regular meals instead–away from your desk.

Be Alert–Don’t Overexert

You might not think that sitting at your desk all day is overexerting yourself, but it can, in fact, cause many physiological problems. Some muscles are underused, while others may be used too much.

A classic TCM book, “The Yellow Emperor’s Canon of Medicine” (Dolphin Books, 1977) states that excessive use of the eyes injures the blood (which nourishes and supports mental activity), excessive sitting injures the muscles, and excessive standing injures the bones. Thus, if you stare at a computer all day, you should consciously blink more often and look away periodically. If you sit all day, be sure to get up and move. If you stand all day, sit whenever you can, if only for a couple of minutes at a time to create a healthy workplace for yourself.

Relieve the Pressure

If you feel pain and discomfort during the day, acupressure can be used to help relieve the tension. Try massaging sore shoulders and neck. For your lower back, try making a loose fist and lightly knocking on the muscles beside the spine.

More Help

When these solutions are not enough, seek treatment from a professional. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat pain and other illnesses. Chinese herbs, nutrition, tui na massage, and other TCM treatments can be used as well for pain and stress management.

Your Heavy Head

If you don’t believe that office work can be physically demanding, think about the amount of work that your neck muscles must do while you sit at your desk looking down at your papers or toward a poorly placed computer screen. The average head weighs about the same as a light bowling ball–about 12 pounds–and comprises approximately eight percent of your total body weight. Try holding that weight in an extended hand all day! Posture is the key: your head is meant to be in alignment with your spine so your neck muscles do not need to be continually active.

The crisis in healthcare can be an “opportunity” to maintain our health better and prevent problems before they occur. Healthy workplace providers like Exan Wellness and businesses like the Royal Bank are finding ways to invest in our most precious commodity, our health, using a variety of medicines, therapies and healthy lifestyle choices. The return on this investment cannot be underestimated – a longer, healthier and more productive life.

ght (c) 2009 Success Performance Solutions

There are plenty of good people looking for work. What turns these good workers into great employees?

Motivation. All a manager needs to do then is uncover what motivates their employees. For the sake of simplicity, let’s say motivation is a collection of learned attitudes and beliefs that energizes your behaviors, defines your values, and shapes your personality.

Mismatching employees to the wrong jobs places managers and employees at opposite ends of a motivational tug of war. These mismatches just sap the life out of the workforce and the soul out of the culture. What are the most common motivational mismatches and hiring mistakes that managers make?

Mismatch of behavioral style. Behavioral styles predict no more and no less than how an individual will perform in the workplace. It doesn’t predict success or competence but the way people will respond to (or ignore) problems, people, pace of the environment and procedures. Mismatches between job and personal styles and inter-personal styles don’t necessarily guarantee failure but do ensure that stress and conflict will eventually show its ugly and costly face. How an individual learns to adapt and a manager learns to respond ultimately determines if harnessing the energy of behavioral style will boom or doom performance.

Mismatch of values. While people can learn to adapt behavioral styles, adjusting personal values, or motivators, is not so easy. In fact, people generally don’t change what’s most important in their lives without some life-altering event like the death of a loved one, a personal tragedy, starting a family, divorce and so on. When values collide, some people will adjust their behaviors to reduce conflict between other people or the job. But with time, the tension between different values wins out. Workers then decide to leave the job or fight for their cause. In either case, the cost to the employer (and many times the health of the employee) is enormous. Selecting individuals who are motivated by the job and/or company culture is just one way to make sure employees expend their energy on productivity not conflict.

Mismatch of personality. At the core of every human being are key personality traits that determine how people respond to competition, initiative, conflict, flexibility, traditions and organizational policy, large groups of people, mental toughness, curiosity and more. Research shows that these traits predispose many workers toward a “natural” competence in areas such as drive for results, follow-through, detail-orientation, planning and organizing, interpersonal skills and stress management. Mismatches between a proven “best-fit” profile for the job and the individual in the job leads to significantly higher incidences of turnover, poor performance and stress.

What’s a manager to do? The answer is quite simple. Understanding what motivates an employee can take hours if not days of observation and interviews. Even then the results might be unpredictable and suspect. Behavioral and personality assessments, on the other hand, take just a few minutes for a candidate or employee to complete. Once in the hands of a manager, these reports can help take the guesswork out of engaging and motivating employees.

Three types of assessment are particularly effective at predicting employee engagement and motivation:

1. A behavioral style assessment such as CriteriaOne DISC identifies the behavioral styles that energize (and de-energize) individual employees.

2. A values assessments like Business Values and Motivators can identify the six core values that motivate employees.

3. A five-factor personality test such as Prevue or ASSESS can predict innate talent and job fit when compared to top-performer job profile. A good job fit is not only a good predictor of high performance but sustainable job satisfaction.
