Research has show recently that more and more people are suffering from work pressure and job stress. In fact, workplace stress is on the rise. In the United States, experts at the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have found that: Stress is linked to one’s physical and mental health and also one’s decreased willingness to take on new and creative endeavours. In addition, 25 per cent to 40 per cent of US workers that experience job burnout is due to workplace stress.

More than ever, it is believed that employees stress will cause a major drain on corporate productivity and competitiveness. Not to mention that, depression, which is predicted to be the leading occupational disease of the 21st century, is also one of the causes for more days lost than any other single factor or aspect. In fact, nearly US$300 billion or US$7,500 per employee, is spent every year in the US on stress-related compensation claims, reduced productivity, absenteeism, health insurance costs, direct medical expenses…etc.

The bad news is that workplace stress is becoming more prevalent as time goes by and workplace stress is a worldwide phenomenon. Statistics from the most recent global stress research study has shown that stress is increasing worldwide and both Western and Eastern countries are going to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress more easily.

There are numerous good benefits for the company if it is able to reduce stress in the workplace for their employees. By reducing stress in the corporate workplace, there will be reduced medical expenses and downtime caused by absenteeism. In addition, by enforcing a stress-free environment in the workplace, there will be a more motivated workforce, higher creativity and innovativeness, higher productivity and so on.

Nonetheless, one can never escape from pressure at work altogether, hence you need to learn how to manage stress effectively. The good news is that, there are a number of natural stress reduction techniques and stress management techniques that you can reduce the negative impacts of stress.

Most of these ways to mange stress depends very much on how you function at work. So what can you do to reduce workplace stress and job stress? The following are some good and helpful suggestions:

Discover a more efficient and effective way to execute the tasks you do to achieve the same result. Learn to manage your time more effectively. Try to prioritise your tasks and duties, involve with things that you can do and avoid taking on more work than you can handle. Try to take regular breaks intervally while at work: Go to the washroom to wash your face or take a drink at the pantry. And try to complete on task before you begin another. Make sure that your company is offering a work environment that is comfortable and ergonomical. If it isn’t, you can simply ask for assistant from your organisation’s health and safety officer. If you can, you should make sure that you get 6 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep regularly. I know that sometimes work projects can take out your extra time and you may have to work longer hours over many weeks or months. However, this will only lead you to diminishing work performance, fatigue, insomnia and eventually stress or even depression. Most importantly, you need to build a good and amicable relationship with your colleagues and co-workers. These are people who you spend most of your time with while at work. Hence, it is important that we build good relationships and enjoy our time at work. Find a purpose to the work that you do. Personally speaking, the road to happiness actually lies in your life passion: Discover what it is that interests you and that you can do well, and when you find it, put your whole soul into it.

The following are addition ideas on how to help you reduce your stress levels:

Exercise Regularly - Exercise is proven and known to help reduce stress effectively. In fact, exercising regularly helps to you to produce more serotonin which is the neurotransmitter for your sense of well-being and happiness. Serotonin also helps to keep our moods under control by helping with sleep, calming anxiety and relieving depression. Do at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. A brisk walk or a swim is ideal.

Learn Relaxation Technique – Learn how to do relaxation technique yourself by calming your body, mind and soul. Relaxation technique helps you to sleep better and relieve stress-related phsical pains such as stomach pains and tension headaches.

Tell Others Your Problems – Do not hid your problems. Simply let it out by sharing your problems with your loved ones or friends. By telling other people about your problems, it can help you to manage stressful situation more effectively and give you a fresh perspective.

Avoid Bad Habits – Avoid drinking too much alcohol or caffeine and cut down on smoking. Instead of helping you, these stimulants will increase your stress levels.

Eat Healthily - Always watch what you eat and have a healthy and balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Also remember to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.

Think Of The Positives – At the end of the day, always think of things and work that you have achieve and done. Focus less on unfinished tasks and duties. Do not be too hard on yourself and take things in its stride.

In our lives, we have found that when we are not sure of what is going to happen, we are more stressed. Uncertainty can lead to stress and there is no fact as true as this one. Many times when we have a prior knowledge of something, we tend to be more relaxed and this is easy for us so that we can be comfortable. As you walk along the road of life you will certainly discover that we have more questions than answers. This means that there are so many uncertainties that we have to form a coping mechanism which can help us go through the stress caused by an unknown tomorrow.

One of the coping mechanism that offers calm and peace to people is faith. This is a system with a different order organized to seek higher power intervention for the present and the future. Religion has therefore transformed many people who actually come with uncertainty to be told that the future can actually hold a lot to look forward to. The change of mind and attitude becomes evident and a positive outlook on life emerges. Despite the life challenges that we go through, you are promised something beyond you. It has been seen in many people who have overcome uncertainty and stress this way.

One thing we can learn from faith is that it takes a different view or perception of the world so that you can face the future without stress. Therefore, it has been seen that the answer can lie in the attitude of an individual when they decide to take each day as it comes. Sometimes, we might go through life with a lot of expectation just to be disappointed severally. When this person tries to make something out of themselves again, it will be difficult because they will associate their future with past failures. Uncertainty therefore plays a major role in causing frustration an discouragement.

A key word that is usually associated with uncertainty and stress is fear. No body has been able to conquer fear and in our daily lives, we have expressed fear and stress has been part of us because of this reason. The first thing that you can do if you want to get out of stress caused by fear is to identify what you might be fearing. Many have had fears of being fired, others fear that secrets do not come out, fear of failure is very common and this might be in business or at a personal level. Other people may fear snakes and other animals that are in their view fearful.

All these fears create a lot of uncertainty. Many experts have advised people to face their fears in order for them to overcome. Facing a fear is to recognize and identify your enemy or your problem and it is also to acknowledge that you will not allow the fear to rule your life. Many people have overcome this way. Make sure that you visit a specialist for guidance if you have stress from uncertainty. We cannot always be sure of the future but, we can take every challenge as it comes.

By: Joaquin Mah

In my own perspective, chest pain is a significant symptom that your body system is having some problems. In fact, chest pain can be frightening and astonishing. The sharp chest pain tightening sensation is similar to that described in heart attack. The thought that it might be heart attack can increase stress chest pains. Almost every day, many people seek emergency treatment for chest pains that are unexplained. But the major causes of chest pain may not exactly be heart attacks, it could be several common factors among those affected, including stress at work, anxiety, depression and a sedentary lifestyle.

Chest pain is always being thought to be a heart attack. In fact, typical heart attack pain occurs in the mid to left side of the chest and may also extend to the left shoulder, the left arm, the jaw, the stomach, or the back. Having chest pain is a very horrifying and frightening experience that a person can have. It is sometimes difficult even for a doctor or other medical professional to tell what is causing chest pain and whether it is life-threatening. Based on my own experience, there are two things that come to mind when it comes to chest pain. The first is a pinched nerve. I had this happen because I would get a pinched nerve in the side of my ribcage and it would result in sudden sharp pains, almost like someone zapped me with an electric shock.

Basically, my doctor said it just would get better on it’s own which is always lovely news. The other thing that comes to mind when I have chest pain is anxiety and stress. I used to have a mild anxiety problem and when this chest pain first occured, I knew nothing about what it was and basically I thought that I was encountering a “heart attack”.

Difference Between Stress Chest Pain & Heart Attack Chest Pain

Stress Chest Pain

Heart Attack Chest Pain

Sharp pain in the mid to left side of the chest Tightness in either the left or right chest Shortness of breath Difficulty breathing Abdominal discomfort Heartburn Intense and Excruciating pain Shortness of breath or Rapid breathing Rapid heart rate Nausea or vomiting Lightheadedness Dizziness Fainting Abdominal pain Sweatiness Unexplained fatigue

I would experience the exact same thing, pain and shortness of breath. Sometimes the pain gets tight, and with each breath I inhale, the chest pain get sharper and tighter. There are many people who get worried too much when they suffered from chest pain, worse still, some even think that they are going to die. These people will usually call an ambulance or quickly rush to the nearest clinic to see a doctor. Of course, I would agree that seeing a doctor is the most clever choice. However, usually the doctor would examine your heart rate and ask you specifically on where is the chest pain position. They will then ask you whether you have any heart-related diseases or problems before which most people do not have such a problem.

Next, they would prescribe Aspirin or maybe a small dose of Xanax, which you can take only when you feel that way, or perhaps a once-a-day antidepressant with a very small dose. All these drugs are used to treat anxiety, stress and depression. Many people suffer from recurring bouts of chest pain over several years, while the healthcare services are unable to find out what’s causing it. Hence, my point is that chest pain is usually related to stress build-up if you do not have any history of heart-related medical conditions.

If you are uncomfortable with medications and drugs, then the next most effective way to stop your chest pain is to have deep breathing and simply RELAX. You have to keep your mind clear of any rapid thoughts, perhaps read, watch a show, call a family member of friend to chat with, or indulge in something else that you enjoy. In my own experience, whenever I have a chest pain which is very tight and sharp until I’ve difficulty breathing, I would tell myself to calm down and start to take a very deep breath in and slowly exhale out. I would do this repetitively for at least 6 times and my chest pain will slowly vanish.

If you are experiencing chest pain every now and then and you do not have any heart-related medical conditions, then I am sure that you are suffering from stress chest pain. The only immediate self-help that you should do is to inhale a deep breath slowly and deeply and then exhale the air out pacefully.

Try this:

1. Relax, take a slow deep (as deep as you can) breath through your nose.

2. Hold for a few seconds.

3. Now breath out, *slowly*, through pursed lips.

This is an almost perfect and effective way to stop your stress chest pain immediately. Make sure after your chest pain has gone, you should continue to relax and continue doing deep breathing for another 5 minutes or so. Remember to relax your muscles and clear your mind of any negative and rapid thoughts.

Nonetheless, if your chest pain continues and you are experiencing it very often, you should immediately seek medical help by visiting a qualified doctor. The reason is that the doctor is much better person to differential between chest pain and heart attack efficiently.

Chest pain often has a negative impact on the sufferer’s daily life in the form of tiredness, anxiety and fear of death. One of the main differences between women and men with unexplained chest pain is that men were more likely to perceive their lives and jobs as being stressful, while women tended more to suffer from symptoms of depressions and anxiety.

When compared with a reference group of people who were not suffering from heart disease, both men and women, experienced more symptoms of depression and anxiety, and work-related stress. From research, both the men and the women with unexplained chest pain led a more sedentary lifestyle. Hence, it is important that we exercise regularly, eat well, sleep well and approach life easily and happily. Our well-being serves a very important aspect of contributing to the overall good health of ourselves. We must conquer our stress by learning to take things easily.

Hence, the next time you experience unexplained and sudden chest pain, do not believe the chest pains indicate a serious health challenge as you may further tighten the muscles, increasing stress chest pains. Think positively! Learn to relax and start your deep breathing exercise. Inhale as deep as you can and then exhale out slowly and pacefully. Nonetheless, you must seek medical help immediately if your chest pain does not stop or become worse.

Modern high performance workplaces differ grandly from traditional organization in terms of operational effectiveness, workplace stress, and organizational dynamics. High performance workplaces must master the task of adapting to an ever-changing business industry that traditional, stuck’ in’ their’ ways’, organizations are lacking. High performance organizations are general deeply entrenched within the technological/electronic age and the effects resulting. Operational effectiveness of a high performance business will have implemented efficient, strategic operational models, stress reduction approaches and proper employee selection and placement decisions. Additionally, successful organizational development practices are involved at high performance organizations. “Organizational development (OD) is not an easily defined single concept. Rather, it’s a term used to encompass a collection of planned-change interventions built on humanistic-democratic values that seek to improve organizational effectiveness and employee well-being” (P. Robbins and Timothy A. Judge, 2009, p. 628).

To manage stress in the workplace, an organization must determine what stress is and identify its causes. Stress is “a state of tension experienced by individuals facing extraordinary demands, constraints, or opportunities” (John R. Schermerhorn, James G. Hunt, Richard N. Osborn, 2008). Stress can be work related and also life related. Work related stress may be caused by employer task demands, role conflicts, physical settings, interpersonal problems, and from ethical dilemmas amongst other causes. When an organization realizes their contribution responsibility of stress in the workplace, diligent and applicable management must be implemented. Though life stressors are not directly stemmed from the workplace, life stressors can spill-over into the workplace and must also be taken into consideration when implementing stress management recourse. Because family events and other personal affairs are commonplace for human living, supportive services such as personal wellness and social support should be available to employees.

Workplace stress management strategies can be in the form of individual approaches or organizational approaches. An individual may manage stress with time management techniques, exercise, or through relaxation. Organizations may implement goal setting strategies or redesign jobs.

Instead of dealing with the present stress of an employee and aware of the consequences of stress, organizations now are trending to implement preventative and post- supportive strategies in an effort to boost employee well-being and ultimately, the organization’s productive effectiveness.

Stress can be caused by anything. Living with the responsibilities that come to individuals day-to-day can cause a great amount of stress. There are times where life can feel like it is outright painful and unfair. We just try to move through these days and keep going living in our stressful lives that just seem to never improve.

It’s obvious that the world we live in is changing. People are piling themselves into massive amounts of debt. The unemployment rate is constantly moving higher, making corporate America unreliable and stressful for those employed by America’s companies. What is the result of all this? Stress, anxiety, and panic attacks are the result. It is no surprise that those problems and illnesses are costing the U.S. $46.6 billion dollars annually.

The constant worry of fear and worry is what people live with on a day-to-day basis. It has become normal for people to receive medicine to fix their illnesses. America has turned into a nation of “pill poppers” who believe prescription medications are the answer to solve any problem. The constant worry of the economy, housing costs, news, gas prices, and even the cost of food has forced Americans to work jobs that they otherwise would have not. Quite frankly, things have changed, and the result is the toll these stressors take on our body.

The reason women experience a greater rate of stress, anxiety, and panic attacks is the responsibility they feel to not only bring home a paycheck, but take care of the family, bills, dinners, development of their children. How are women supposed to have time for themselves after supporting a family by working and taking care of their every need? The reports of women experiencing mental illness’s is at an all time high.

Today, there is a need for everyone to be connected at every moment of the day. The invention of the Internet is great, but it has added a great deal of anxiety and stress to the lives of the people who are constantly worried about being connected. Come on, iPhones, iPods, Blackberry’s, Wireless Cards (they actually have these cards made to connect you anywhere now, no matter if there is WiFi or not). Why is that people always feel like they have to be connected? It’s pretty simple, the more connected a person is to his business and life, the more successful the person seems to be.

Recently I was on a weekend getaway to a log cabin in North Georgia with friends. There was one guy there who was worried before the trip if there would be wireless internet and a phone line, now I know why he was so worried. He said, and I quote “I run 3 businesses online, if I am offline for more then 12 hours, they go into chaos and I am on my way to being out of business.” I thought to myself, this guy might be rich, but he will never enjoy life. How can someone live with the constant worry and fear that if they are not connected for one day, they will be out of business? That’s not a way to live your life.
